Members operating heavy goods vehicles over 12 tonnes gross vehicle weight (HGVs), need to have the following permits: Direct Vision Standard and HGV Safety. Failure to have these before entering and operating in most of Greater London could result in a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).
If you're found to be operating an HGV in most of Greater London without these permits, the PCN is up to £550, which can be reduced to £275 if paid within 14 days.
DVS exists to reduce the risk of vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists near HGVs.
The HGV safety permit scheme covers most of Greater London and is in operation 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
- Step 1 is to see where the DVS permit applies. Please visit the DVS Map on slide 14.
- Next, find your direct vision star rating and ensure your vehicle is fitted with the appropriate safety equipment as outlined in the steps below.
- The last step is to apply for your permit which is free of charge.
For more information on DVS Permits, please read the Guidance for Operators Entering London.
